How does Movicol works?
Movicol contains the active ingredient macrogol 3350 (polyethylene glycol), which is a type of medicine known as an osmotic laxative, each Movicol sachet also contains sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and potassium chloride.
The contents of the sachets should be mixed with water to make a drink. Macrogol is an inert substance that passes through the gut without being absorbed into the body. It relieves constipation because it causes the water it is taken with to be retained in the bowel instead of being absorbed into the body. This increases the water content and volume of the stools in the bowel making them softer and easier to pass.
How long does Movicol take to work?
Movicol does not work as quickly as stimulant laxatives such as Senna which starts to work within 6-12 hours.
When taking Movicol as directed in the Patient Information Leaflet, most people will start to see an improvement in their constipation within 1-3 days.
Movicol long-term use
For the treatment of constipation, Movicol is usually taken for 2 weeks or until stools are consistently soft and easy to pass. If you continue to be affected by constipation after using Movicol for 14 consecutive days then you should speak to a doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use Movicol Chocolate Sachets?
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, suspect you are pregnant or breast-feeding
