What is Athletes Foot?
Athlete’s foot is the common term for a skin infection of the feet or toes caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. They thrive in warm and moist environments such as changing rooms, showers, shoes and socks, so they are also happy living on your feet where conditions are similar. Athlete’s foot usually occurs between your toes, but can also affect the soles and sides of your feet. While fungus causes the main infection, yeasts and bacteria may also develop and cause other symptoms such as smelly feet.
Athlete’s foot is very contagious and can spread easily by skin-to-skin contact or through contact with contaminated surfaces and items. Sharing contaminated items such as towels, bed sheets and clothing can spread the infection.
Athlete’s foot infection can also spread to other places of your body, causing other fungal infections such as jock itch.
Treatment of Athlete’s Foot
A topical antifungal treatment (a treatment placed directly on your skin) can be an easy way to combat your athlete’s foot. Antifungal treatments effectively attack the main types of fungi that cause the infection, including dermatophytes. They are easy to penetrate into your skin to relieve your symptoms.
The active ingredients below can be used to treat athlete’s foot:
- Clotrimazole and Bifonazole (both are antifungals)
- Hydrocortisone – a mild corticosteroid that treats symptoms of inflamed athlete’s foot when combined with Clotrimazole
Whats is the difference between Canesten Cream and Canesten Bifonazole Once a day cream?
Both Canesten Cream and Canesten Bifonazole Once-a-day cream are antifungal creams and work the same way.

Who is at risk of getting athlete’s foot?
Athlete’s foot is very common and up to 7 in 10 people may suffer from it at some point in their lives. It got its name because it affects people whose feet tend to be damp and sweaty, which is often the case with athletes. However, anyone can get this infection. You are more likely to get it if:
- The skin on your feet is damaged.
- You walk barefoot in common areas, like gyms, swimming pools, communal showers and changing rooms.
- You frequently have sweaty feet,or you suffer from hyperhidrosis (excessive seating). This foot fungus thrives in warm, moist and sweaty conditions.
- You wear tight, closed-toe shoes that make your feet hot and sweaty.
- You have a weakened immune system.
The candida group can be responsible for conditions such as sweat rash. Sweat rash can appear anywhere on the body, but is more likely to occur where folds of skin rub against each other, such as: under the breasts, under arms, around the groin and on the back. Candida is a yeast-like fungus that usually lives harmlessly on our skin. However, the natural balance that normally keeps it under control can be upset by factors such as sweating, tight or synthetic clothing and cosmetic preparations such as bath additives.
When levels of the yeast increase, the skin can develop the following symptoms: persistent burning and itching, soreness and a variety of patches or blemishes as well as a softened and soggy appearance.
Self Help Tips to help Athlete’s foot treatment to work
Although the infected area will itch, try not to scratch. Scratching will damage the surface of the skin and cause the infection to spread further.
• Keep the affected skin areas clean.
• Pay particular attention to drying the skin, including between the toes, but avoid excessive rubbing.
• Do not share towels, bath mats, etc. with other people as you could spread the infection to them.
• Always wash your hands after treating the infection to prevent it from spreading.
• Wash your socks, stockings and tights thoroughly in hot water to remove any shed skin or fungal spores.
• Change your footwear daily if possible
