How does Dioctyl  Capsules work?

Dioctyl Capsules (Docusate sodium) is a  stool softener and provides relief when the bowel movement is painful or difficult if you are constipated or suffer from piles or anal fissure.  

The active ingredient in Dioctyl capsules, Docusate sodium which is a type of medication called a laxative. It works by increasing the amount of water the stool absorbs in the gut, making the stool softer and easier to pass. It also helps to stimulate the muscles in your bowel, pushing it through your back passage so you can push it out more easily.

Dioctyl is not suitable for children under 12 years of age.

What you need to know before you take Dioctyl

Do not take Dioctyl 100mg capsules :
• if you are allergic to docusate sodium or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
• if you are suffering from stomach pains
• if you are feeling sick, or have been sick in the last 24 hours
• if you have a blocked bowel (intestinal obstruction)
• if you have been told you are unable to take a sugar called fructose. Dioctyl contains sorbitol
and is therefore unsuitable for you.
Warnings and precautions
Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Dioctyl:
• if you need to take a laxative every day
• if you have regular or constant stomach pain.
Other health conditions should be excluded before taking this medicine.
The treatment of constipation with Dioctyl is only additional to a healthy lifestyle and diet (such as increased intake of fluids, dietary fibre and exercise).

What is Constipation?

Constipation is common and it affects people of all ages. You can usually treat it at home with simple changes to your diet and lifestyle.

It’s likely to be constipation if:

  • you have not had a poo at least 3 times during the last week
  • the poo is often large and dry, hard or lumpy
  • you are straining or in pain when you have a poo

The most common causes include:

  • not eating enough fibre – such as fruit, vegetables and cereals

  • changing your diet or daily routine
  • a side effect of medicine
  • stress, anxiety or depression

Constipation is also common during pregnancy and for 6 weeks after giving birth.

Rarely, constipation may be caused by a medical condition.

MAKE CHANGES TO YOUR DIET

To make your poo softer and easier to pass:

IMPROVING YOUR TOILET ROUTINE

Keep to a regular time and place and give yourself plenty of time to use the toilet.

Do not delay if you feel the urge to poo.

To make it easier to poo, try resting your feet on a low stool while going to the toilet. If possible, raise your knees above your hips.

CONSIDER INCREASING YOUR ACTIVITY

A daily walk or run can help you poo more regularly.

How To use

As  a stool softener docusate sodium 100 mg dosage:

Adults and children over 12 years old and elderly – Up to five capsules daily in divided doses. The capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water.

The recommended dose in adults and adolescents (12 years and older) is:
• Maximum dose is 5 capsules although you may need less
• Take your capsules one at a time at regular intervals throughout the day
• Swallow Dioctyl capsules whole with a drink of water
• Reduce the dose as your condition gets better
• If you have been told to take Dioctyl during a stomach X-ray, you should take four capsules.
Your doctor will tell you exactly when to take the capsules.

Product Details

Dioctyl 100mg capsules 100 pack. Dioctyl capsules are for the treatment of constipation. Dioctyl works by softening the motions to produce a gentle movement. Dioctyl 100mg pil can also be used to prevent constipation.

Dioctyl with food and drink
Dioctyl can be taken with or without food.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask
your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
Pregnancy
The safety of Dioctyl during pregnancy has not yet been proven.

Breast-feeding

Docusate sodium is excreted in breast milk and should therefore, be used with caution in breastfeeding mothers.
Dioctyl contains sorbitol, sunset yellow (E110) and Propylene glycol
• Do not take Dioctyl if you are intolerant to any sugars such as fructose or sorbitol. This medicine
contains approximately 26 mg of sorbitol in each capsule.
• Dioctyl contains the colouring Sunset Yellow E110. This may cause an allergic reaction.
• This medicine contains 11.5 mg propylene glycol in each capsule.

Ingredient

These capsules are yellow and white soft gelatin capsules containing 100 mg of the active ingredient dioctyl docusate sodium.

 

Side Effects & Warnings

Docusate sodium side effects

This medicine does not usually cause side-effects, but very rarely you may have diarrhoea, feel sick, have stomach cramps or have a skin rash. If you have any side- effects which continue for more than a few days or become troublesome, see your doctor.

If you can answer yes to any of these questions, do not take the medicine. Instead, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Are you pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant?
Are you breastfeeding a baby?
Are you suffering from stomach pains?
Are you feeling sick, or have you been sick in the last 24 hours?
Are you allergic to these capsules or any of the ingredients, such as sunset yellow (E110)?
Are you taking mineral oil?
Are you intolerant to small amounts of sugar?
Are you already taking a laxative?
If you need to take a laxative every day, or if you have regular or constant stomach ache, see your doctor.

This medicine should not be given to children under 12 years of age.

Do not use this medicine after the expiry date shown on the label.
Keep this medicine in a safe place, out of the reach and sight of children.
Do not store above 25°C. Store in original package in order to protect from moisture.
Always return any left over medicine to a pharmacist.
